Do Bath Bombs Cause UTI?: Bath Safety 101

Over the past few years, bath bombs have become everyone’s self-care companion. With vibrant colours, fun shapes, and relaxing scents, these fizzy treats can truly boost your mood and help you practice relaxation in the bath. There’s no denying that there are many mental health benefits to using bath bombs, but are they safe for your body?

When you soak in a tub filled with fragrance, colours, and the occasional glitters, it’s practical to be worried about your skin. The good news is, bath bombs are generally safe as long as you know proper care, the ingredients, and your own body. The fact that you are reading up on bath bomb safety right now is a start!

Many women also fear that the chemicals in bath bomb may cause UTIs or vaginal yeast infection, and that is the opposite of the glamour that bath bomb advertisements portray. While it is possible, these irritations are definitely avoidable with proper education. This is why we are here to give you a break down on how to enjoy bath bombs safely.

STEP 1: Read the Ingredients

Claims that bath bombs are “natural” or “organic” almost don’t mean a thing when your body reacts to any of the ingredients listed down. Chemical compositions react differently to different skin types whether it is natural or synthetic. However, this does not mean that you shouldn’t care about where you get your bath bombs.

Generally, ingredients should all be skin safe and approved by your country’s food and drug administration. The only way to find out about this is through looking at the ingredients listed on the website. If a bath bomb brand does not list their ingredients, that is already a red flag.

Royal Essence’s jewellery bath bombs contain ingredients that are all skin safe and formulated with sensitive skin types in mind. You may also view our ingredients list below every product so you can do your research and identify if you are allergic to any of these components.

The basic ingredients of bath bombs is sodium bicarbonate (commonly known as baking soda) and citric acid. These two create that mesmerising fizz in your bath and are usually the top two ingredients in all bath bombs. The rest are preservatives, fragrances, dyes, and additives like glitter.

Preservatives, fragrances, and dyes must all be skin safe, but people may have individual allergies to specific ingredients. And when it comes to additives, beware of microplastics in glitters that can enter your body or be abrasive to your skin. When we put  glitter to our bath bombs, we use synthetic mica or synthetic fluorphlogopite which is skin-safe, plastic-free, and biodegradable.

STEP 2: Know Your Body

To know which bath bombs to avoid, you need to know which ingredients you could be allergic to. You can do this by comparing ingredients with other products that previously gave you an allergic reaction such as skincare products or even processed food that may have used the same preservatives.

If you have moderate to severe eczema or similar skin conditions, go with bath bombs with a milder fizz or fragrance. And if you’re still not sure, a  simple skin test before dipping your toes in the bath will help. Whenever you’re trying a new bath bomb, simply rub it against the crook of your elbow and observe any skin reaction for the next 48 hours. If you experience any irritation or redness, do not use the product.

When it comes to vaginal irritations, it all boils down to your pH balance. Unfortunately, the vagina’s pH balance is so delicate that soaps, water, and even food can throw it off. Just like these factors, bath bombs can also throw off your vagina’s pH balance even without a sensitive skin type. Although not common, it may lead to urinary tract infection or irritation.

Do not worry though! Vaginal irritations can be avoided while enjoying these self-care favourites as long as you practice proper care in the tub.

STEP 3: Practice Proper Bath Care

We don’t want to give you more stress when taking a bath; bath bombs are made for relaxation and self-care. While proper education is important especially when it comes to your health, proper care should not be complicated and should still allow you to have fun in the bath.

After checking ingredients or doing a skin test, simply let your bath bomb fizz and wait for that  sterling silver jewellery surprise. When your tub is vibrant with colour and you can smell the fragrance all over your bathroom, it’s time to relax!

Do what you normally do when taking a bath. You can sip on a glass of wine, read a book, listen to music, or watch a TV show. Our bath bombs are not just limited to aiding relaxation, we also add shea butter to our bath bombs to moisturise your skin and give it a healthy glow.

When your fingers and toes start  pruning up, that’s how you know it’s time to stand up from your bath. Overstaying and soaking your body in the bathtub too long might increase your chances of developing an allergic reaction or irritation.

It is also very important to rinse off any residue when you hop off the bath. Use a gentle soap like our  whipped soaps to remove oil and other residue, add an extra layer of moisture, and feel squeaky clean!

With our bath bombs, the fun doesn’t end when you drain all of your bath water down. A hidden gem awaits when you step out of your tub!  All bath bombs are hiding a 925 sterling silver jewellery surprise with over 600 designs to reveal. These rings, necklaces, and earrings are worth $90 up to $5000!

Bath bombs are definitely enjoyable especially with our added sparkly twist.
